Reading is a skilled task that requires a combination of prior understanding of language and recognition of written language rules (Scarborough 2001).
Dyslexia or reading therapy requires the use of multiple senses to activate and train the brain on the combination of skills required for fluid and effective reading. The ultimate goal is to provide the learner with the tools to decode text and comprehend the meaning behind the words.
Often times, children will show more difficulty with reading around fourth to fifth grade as the demand switches from learning how to read to reading to learn.
Oral myofunctional therapy focuses on the structure and function of the facial muscles at rest and in action. The most common oral myofunctional disorders include oral habits, a tongue thrust, and mouth breathing.
You may benefit from myofunctional therapy if you:
- Are a mouth breather
- Have facial asymmetry or a tongue thrust
- Have a resting open mouth posture or a “gummy” smile
- Are struggling with an oral habit (nail biting, pen chewing, etc.)
- Had repeated braces care (orthodontics or Invisalign)
