SLPs: Where We Work
The Speech-Language Pathologist’s (SLPs) field is growing and expanding. We work in various settings in collaboration with many other professionals.
· In schools, SLPs focus on communication disorders that impact a child's ability to access the educational curriculum or environment. SLPs play an essential role in establishing an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for each student to participate in appropriate educational activities.
· In health care, SLPs work in home health, hospitals, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation centers, and skilled nursing/assisted living facilities. Some health care settings specialize in specific disorders, and others provide general services for communication disorders or swallowing.
· In private practice, SLPs decide whether they wish to be generalists or specialists. The generalists will address all communication and swallowing issues as needed. Specialists narrow their focus to specific areas of the field. Often, specialists take additional training beyond licensure to enhance their qualifications.
After working in the medical setting in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) and schools, I started my private practice, All Speech, LLC. Currently, I am working with school-age children with special needs. Also, I am working with adults with oromyofuctional, communication, and swallowing challenges. The best part of All Speech, LLC is that I can address each client's unique case thoroughly without any restrictions of external demands.
I have been enjoying every minute of working with my clients. I am so grateful to be part of the habilitation or rehabilitation process by serving individuals across the life span.
